This post contains some preliminary backstory and in-game concepts to help those of you planning characters for my Princes of the Apocalypse D&D campaign.
A lot of details, particularly anything that could relate to the plot, I don’t want to reveal just yet so as not to spoil things. Other details just simply aren’t developed yet at this early stage of concepts and idea brainstorming. So this post is by no means conclusive and details may be subject to change. SETTING: Original credit for making the following map goes to reddit user toxik0n. (I don’t know you, but thanks man!). Through the magic of photoshop, I made it my own. Right now it’s mostly blank because you haven’t explored anything yet and I will keep it updated as the campaign progresses. Also the scale on this custom map is different then the one in the book, so I'm not sure which I'll go with yet, so don't pay that much attention right now. The entire campaign takes place here, a region known as the Dessarin Valley. (So no grand globe-trekking expeditions this time around.) The published content has the region located in the Forgotten Realms setting, but I want to be original and unrestricted by official D&D lore. So what we are doing is essentially picking up the Dessarin Valley and dropping it into an original world. Said world has no name as of yet, nor any countries, continents, or kingdoms set in stone. Therefore I’d be quite open to giving you guys the freedom to invent locations that are relevant to your character’s history and incorporating that into our world. The Dessarin Valley is a lightly settled frontier region of caravan towns, isolated homesteads, and uninhabited wilderness. The season is early summer. The hub town of your adventure will center on the humble town of Red Lark. (I changed the name from Red Larch because to me “Larch” sounds just plain unpleasant). It is the largest settlement in the area, but that being said it’s no big city. Situated along the Long Road, it is an important stop for hundreds of caravans and travelers each year. Mysterious events have the locals increasingly concerned. CULTURE: It will be a medieval time period with monsters being fairly commonplace, magic being somewhat rare (Not completely low magic, but not readily available to average people), and complex machinery being extremely rare (but not completely off limits, this is fantasy after all). This region at least will primarily be a classic European-style fantasy, with various influences here and there from a variety of other cultures. Other areas of the world could be based more heavily on other medieval cultures, such as middle-eastern or asian. DEITIES:Since we’re not using “official” D&D lore, we don’t have to strictly adhere to the D&D deities. If you want to use an established deity, that’s fine. You can also keep the same general concept of a particular deity but just change the name and/or certain characteristics. Or you can even make up your own. Just be sure to let me know the details of any deities you create or alter. THEMES:The Elements – the main theme of this campaign is “Elemental Evil”, where fire, earth, air, and water themed enemies are the primary antagonistic forces rather than typical undead, demons, or devils. (Although there might be a little undead). Rising Heroes – My goal is to develop the player characters over the course of the game from ordinary adventurers into legendary heroes. Therefore any Evil alignment is not allowed for main characters. You're the good guys here, eventually on a quest to save the world. This isn't the kind of campaign for random craziness and shenanigans. Social RP – Much of the campaign, especially the first half, involves lots of social interaction and networking with NPCs. There will be plenty of action and combat throughout the adventures of course, but don’t make direct combat your character’s one and only focus. Exploration – The beginning of the campaign tasks the characters with going out to explore and discover multiple locations and environments, and towards the end there is a giant dungeon crawl. So your characters should be prepared to travel around, and thus skills or abilities related to exploring would likely be helpful as well. CHARACTER RACES:Humans and their various civilizations are by far the most common and make up the majority of the known world. Dwarven kingdoms exist here and there, but most aren’t as prosperous as they were in ancient times. Still, dwarves are a fairly regular sight in most large settlements. The elusive Elven societies live mostly in detached isolation from the rest of the world, and thus seeing an elf in town will definitely catch people’s eye, similar to spotting a celebrity. Many other races exist and are occasionally observed in public, particularly in places where travelers frequent. However this isn’t Star Wars where dozens of bizarre races can openly walk around and nobody bats an eye. I’m not going to rule out non-standard races on principal, but more “normal” characters will be greatly preferred. I suggest, as some people have already been doing, coming up with multiple character concepts so that I can advise players on which ones are best suited for this campaign. PLAYER CHARACTERS:As mentioned above, be mindful of what kind of character you consider making with regards to how they fit in with the rest of the in-game world and the nature of the campaign itself. For now expect to play as one main character each. All characters will start the campaign at 3rd level. Roll starting gold exactly as the Player's Handbook tells you to for your class. Ideals/Bonds/Flaws: You can use the ones in the Player's Handbook or make your own. Character sheets should be done on mythweavers (click for link) and then linked to me either in this thread somewhere or in PM. I'll figure out a place to gather them all together eventually. Playing as secondary characters instead of or in addition to main characters might be possible depending on how things go. A “main character” is the character a player uses frequently, playing as them in most sessions. Main characters are the protagonists that the story is centered on. A “secondary character” is another character used by the same player, but perhaps not as often. Secondary characters supplement the story but are not a driving force. SESSIONS:Rather than one massive uninterrupted RP, I’ll be running this game episodically. Each “episode”, known as a session, will feature one individual outing or adventure. Players have the option of which session they wish to participate in, but if you sign up you must stay committed for the entire duration of the session. Sessions will most likely be run one at a time, but running more than one session simultaneously may be possible depending on the story and player interest. Posting requirements for a session will be once a day if you can (preferred), or once every other day or two (at minimum). Players who are inactive more than a day or two might have to be skipped or ignored to keep the RP moving. Players who are inactive longer than that may have to be kicked out. A player kicked out of a session might not be allowed to join future sessions. ASK QUESTIONS FOR MORE DETAILS:Again, this is just the most basic of stuff. More details will be added when we start the campaign. I also know I’m probably forgetting to mention a ton of stuff, so please ask about anything that was unclear or unmentioned, and feel free to make suggestions on world-building details as well.

So, a series of homebrew questions for my character. Family Sword: Any sword I equip that is better than my last in considered a skill upgrade with the family sword, and not a change in sword itself. Stats change, the image remains the same. Large Backpack: Pay for a larger backpack, pound per pound. Base Backpack is 2gp. 90-pound backpack would be 62gp Also, because I have the money to spare, I'm buying a mount >.> Alright, so I think I have a backstory idea that should fit very well with this setting, despite being a very unusual race with a /very/ unusual mount aesthetic ((No stat modifier)). I will post when I have the backstory down. I also request I get a 50gp loan from the DM with a 20% lump interest. My first 60gp just vanishes as a gift to the great god and mighty GM SuperCommando. Me and Lax are also going to pair up our characters backstory so that they knew each other before the campaign starts. Another Edit. I may have broken my Fighter, because I can now learn 5 cantrips, 3 from any magic class I choose, and 4 1st level spells, 1 from any magic class I choose. I also ignore up to 3/4 cover, and I double the range on any spell involving attack rolls. To top it all off, I can cast 3 1st level spells instead of just two. I'm so sorry XD www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=653278 there is the sheet for your perusal. Go easy om it.

What are is the rarity status of Dragon Borns Pretty rare I think. Kind of like a really fancy car - you know they're out there and occasionally see one, but you can go about daily life for quite a while and forget that they exist, if that makes sense. So Nivara's presence will be unusual at first, but it's not like people have never seen a dragonborn before. I like that idea, so no problem. Wouldn't make sense to start the game with a "special" weapon only to replace it later. That's reasonable. Checked it out on your sheet. Very cool. lol. Deal. Cool, no problem. I'll double check what you've got. Not expecting to find anything wrong mind you, just curious to see how you got all that to work. No worries, I'm really liking the backstory and personality stuff. Same with Lax. Overall I'm really impressed with how interesting everyone's characters are turning out so far.

So I think a couple of us(myself most definitely included) have been having a hard time figuring out Character Creation. However, I found a pair a of reeeeeeeeeeaaally helpful tutorials that I think will be helpful to others as well. Basically I used to the default sheet they give you in the description, filled it in, and cross reference between it and the ones SC has provided through Myth Weavers. I filled out the standard one so it's easier to to along with the video, then once completed copied it over to the MW CCS. The first video explains how to make a character(anything he doesn't explicitly state you can figure out by watching what he does), and the second video is how to level up a character, which I found helpful since we're starting out at 3rd level. Tutorials
How to make a 5th Edition Character.
How to level up a 5th Edition Character.
Here's the link to my completed CCS www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=652904Due to the difficulty I've had in making just one character however, I'm kind of drained from the frustration over the past week or so, so I'm probably not going to make any more despite my plans to do so.

Hey guys. So I was taking a break this evening to spend some time with the folks and took a break from working on my character for the day. But in the meantime I had the inspiration to type up an excerpt of an idea that I had for a little snippet of the original world we're making that I thought I'd share with you guys. It describes a place and culture I had wanted to feature in the backstory of one of my character ideas, but I ended up typing a lot more than I thought. So it instead it turned out to be a descriptor of perhaps something we can use in the world. I'll post it below in a spoiler along with what I have so far of my particular character. I may just add more to this post, either more character ideas or explain more about my location and culture to just keep things more organized. Hope you guys like it. <3 Character Sheets Kardesh Saiyavek - Psionics and the Mystic The Draeglaan of the NorthFar to the north from the kingdoms of men, beyond the thick of elven forests, and among the mountains touched by some of the oldest of the Dwarven families lay range of mountains many call The Edge. It is here among the vast tundra plains and rocky hills is a region home to a variety of hardy and mainly savage species of native to the region. To the meeker races this territory is a frontier of many dangers besides those that settle among the thick pine forests that grow along the outskirts. But even then the tundra plains themselves have been a home to a sparse population of nomad tribes and other beings.
On the edge of the mountain ring that surround the tundra are the tallest and loneliest of these peaks are the Rising Flights. It is here that a conglomerate of small Dragonborn clans make their dwellings among the ruins of an ancient fortress city that those familiar with the region know as Drockmoure. It is there where they live and eek out an existence in near isolation from most other civilizations. Adopting a disciplined and warrior like culture the Dragonborn who call themselves the Draeglaan stand vigil over their territories from the peaks of the Flights, ready to staunchly defend their home and families from any danger.
Although they are a militant society that hold much merit toward an individual's martial prowess and ability to perform admirably in their duty, the Draeglaan are not a savage people in contrast to their surroundings. They are rather a disciplined society with rigid codes of law that each of the clans that form the conglomerate that is enforced by and preserved by a monarchy that guides the Draeglaan. Though unlike a traditional monarchy it shares its power with a council formed and relegated by the people. it is this Council of the People that governs itself rather than a singular figurehead to rule over all. Instead the monarchy's role is to provide security with it's armies to enforce law legislated by the Council, although the Throne still carries considerable influence in matters of state and may exercise such powers should the need arise. Draeglaan society is largely built upon the deeds of an individual in a form of meritocracy where one's particular skills and talents often dictate one's station in society inside of a certain caste usually of their choice. Warriors, scholars, artisans, laborers and hunters all largely try and work together in a cohesive unit to better work together in surviving the harsh rugged place that is their home.

That environment actually fits well with my Bugbear's origin concept I had. I had been imagining him being from a pseudo-Mongolian nomadic culture(he's got the Tribal Nomad thing from the Outlander background), status based around martial and hunting prowess and artisan skills, one that wanders cold grassy plains.
Though, a driving factor is his pursuit of those who destroyed his homeland, though this could easily just be the razing of one small area of the Edge. If Alder's Tribe wandered the plains North of the Pine forests you mentioned, and they were mostly slaughtered by some sort of bad guys from the Dessarin Valley we'll be RPing in, Alder could be pursuing them.
Depending on the relations between Alder's Tribe and the Draeglaan, maybe that could be a small reason for your Dragonborn too?

If you could produce some more background on Alder's tribe and their destruction Beta, I think I have a way I could totally work that right into the campaign.

If you could produce some more background on Alder's tribe and their destruction Beta, I think I have a way I could totally work that right into the campaign. Summary: A pragmatic Tribe of skilled hunters, fierce warriors, and skilled craftsmen. They mostly kept to themselves aside from trading with other Bugbears and other species on occasion. They were nomadic and very spiritual, nature minded folks. They were a very independent and proud group, a close-knit community. Damage Report: They set up a camp they intended to use for an extended period of time, so it had full tents, drying racks, fire pits, and beasts of burden all out and in use. Camp got razed in the mid day when most of them were sleeping(since they are largely nocturnal), tents burned, pack animals slaughter, stored goods ruined and about 80% of the Tribe was massacred. This is just the idea I had, isn't concrete yet so I can edit it to better fit the idea if needed.

And some races, like Mousefolk for example, get a static feat (Mine is Alert). But Bards at least dont get a feat till fourth level when I can do a stat increase - and im going to go for the stat increased.

Well I finally got all the numbers worked out for my first character sheet for my Dragonborn Mystic. I'll fill out all the descriptions later. I may make another one since I seem to have this urge to keep D&D-izing my personal characters. I also left a link to the PDF file for the Unearthed Arcana: Psionics and Mystic class article for reference. You'll find the links in my previous post with my lore suggestion.

That could be really interesting, Crucible. Tell you what, why don't you come up with some initial personality and background stuff, maybe even start up a mythweavers character sheet, and I'll take a look. Spiderfolk would be better than Drider, especially since (apparently) Spiderfolk can retract their spider legs and blend in with ordinary people.
EDIT: Be sure to check my big info dump near the top of this page for any information that might influence your character design.

Okay so it's really late so I may have missed stuff due to sleep deprivation, but I went over the character sheets and have a few notes for you guys. (If I don't mention you in this list, you're already good). Lax: MeriExperience: 900 XP, Next Level 2,700 XP Passive Perception should be 16 (10 + dex mod + proficiency + keen senses) EDIT: Sorry, WIS mod above, not DEX. Told you I was tired. STR save: +1 DEX save: +5 CON save: 0 WIS save: +2 CHA save: 0 Short Bow, Attack +5, Damage 1d6+3 Short Sword, Attack + 5, Damage 1d6+3 Daggers (gotta specify how many you have, like x2) Attack +5, Damage 1d4+3 Beta: Alder SpinebrekerYour DEX should give you +1 attack with your javalins Just need to flesh out the personal/background detail portions on the second page and you’re golden. Unholy: SircesSheet looks good as far as numbers and organization goes, but I know nothing about the character himself. Please include some personality/background details. Fac: GnoffFor your weapons the stuff in Attack should really be in Damage. Attack for the crossbow and dagger would both be +5. Next Level: 2,700 XP Seraph: Kardesh SaiyavekSame as Unholy.

SuperCommando , I was reading in the PHB and found this excerpt and was wondering if it would apply to the Javelin? I checked to make sure, and the Javelin does have the thrown property, so if I opt to use my Strength Modifier instead of my Dexterity Modifier I get +5 to my Javelins since I get a +2 proficiency bonus to my +3 Strength Modifier. Is this doable? Also I've been trying to find a suitable mount/beast for him to have. I don't think any of your standard things like Horses and other ungulates would be able to tolerate him riding them. With my starting gold I could buy an Elephant, but I think that'd be too much. Could I ride something like an Owlbear? I figured it'd be more tolerant of a Bugbear and it seems like something that'd be indigenous to Alder's homeland. Owlbears are just too cute <3 EDIT: I have added Alder's appearance and history to his CS.

You don't necessarily need a mount, but some characters already have one (Nivara at least with her Kirin Brimstone). Plus if Alder came all the way from a land past the northern kingdom(s) then he probably didn't do so on foot, huh? You're right that an elephant would be excessive, but I guess you could take the owlbear. You did make me realize something though, which is I have no idea what anyone is actually doing with their starting gold. So general announcement to all: Please list your gold on your character sheet. Even if you don't remember what you rolled initially, please put a note somewhere indicating your current total and keep that total up to date as the game progresses.

Fighting in and out of Yappa’s, I don’t know if I will be able to formally join this awesome idea until properly able to sign in without stress. So I’ll just post up my two character concepts that would be possible to use. Have another, but he is in the works right now. Lorban Amethysteye - Mountain Dwarf Cleric of Knowledge - Battleaxe and light crossbow - One of the few survivors to a rivalry dispute between their clan’s draconic originator and his long-time foe. The mountain shook and fell over their heads, Lorban received a vision from his patron deity for a possible escape route that saved the clan from total destruction. However, in the journey through the Underdark, his wife was murdered by the rival dragon’s worshippers and her tiara taken. When making it to the surface world, Lorban joined the clergy of Dumathoin in grave thanks and to gain a chance to avenge his wife despite his humble starting as a clan jeweler. The Doctor - Tiefling Warlock - The Boneshear and sickle - The creature born from unwanting parents and a infernal giver, a boy to grow up alone and only to serve with thievery and at the worst, murder. The only light in the slow, painful years as a hated creature in the slum of his home-city was the selfless generosity of a cleric performing charity. To be given homely education and the chance of helping the fellow unfortunate, enough to act as a caring doctor to the sick and dying. Alas, no amount of compassion could save him from unrational fear and zealous hatred when his face was exposed by playful children. A mob came and burned his clinic. They assumed the demon died when he never stepped out, they could have only hope. Elsewhere, people whispered about a kindly if odd bloodletting octor caring for the needed or tending to dark problems, only to disappear. [Possibly Secondary Character]

Just put up a thread to gather all our character sheets, links, and info in one place. If your character checks out, I'll let you know that you can post in that thread. Edto, Lax, Beta, Fac, Seraph, and Huka, you may all post in that thread. Please use the following template: (here put Main Character or Secondary Character)
(Name goes here with mythweavers CS linked to it) Race: Class: Alignment:
Appearance
Personality:
Background:
Theme Song:
Most of that you can probably just copy/paste directly off your sheets. Appearance can be a written description and/or image. And yes, that last entry does say Theme Song. Make this a link to any youtube video you want containing a song that I will play in-game if your character is having an awesome personal moment. EDIT: In the cbox Lax asked me to clarify if the theme song is supposed to "epic showdown time!" music or "having a moment" music. My (paraphrased) response was something like a bit of both. I think of it like "character is really in the zone" music. Not necessarily "I'm going super saiyan" epic (although that certainly is an option should you choose), but something that fits any time when the character is really in their element doing something cool. So I hope that helps anyone struggling to choose the right song.
