Hello all, Remnant here! Hope everyone had a great Halloween yesterday!
It's the start of a new month and almost time for a new year - but we're not quite there yet!
In the spirit of the Holidays, I challenge you to write a story. It can be short, it can be long, it can be a drabble. If it's a novella, you might as well link the Google Doc instead of copy and pasting, but to each their own haha!
The theme and genre of this Holiday Contest is entirely up to you. Naturally, you have the recommended scary horror stories of spooktober, the family-bonding stories of giving-thanks, and the gift-giving and gift-receiving stories of Santa's favorite day of the year. What will you write? A lone Marine trapped in a desolate environment, hunted by an unknown enemy? Perhaps a gathering of Jiralhanae on Doisac, celebratory the traditions of pride and family with a feast? Or what about the ever-social Unggoy, gifting each other lovely presents in the frozen snowfalls of Balaho?
Whatever you write, I will be more than eager to read it. It doesn't even have to be based on the Holiday theme. If you want to write an action story or a suspense story, go for it. It can everything or nothing to do with the Holiday's, however including any Holiday themes or references will constitute bonus points to the overall score.
Deadline for the contest is Dec. 31st, 2021 at midnight. End the new year with a bang!
Judges for this contest will be me and the first two people who decide to volunteer.
SCORING CRITERIA:
Story - The body of the writing material. The driving point. The plot, the outcome, the characters, the interweaving web between them all. The story is the main portion of what you write and ultimately the most important. It is a foundation upon which you build eagerly. Without a strong foundation, the structure will inevitably fail. This will be scored the strongest and strictest.
Creativity - The soul of the writing material. The sauce in your five-star gourmet pasta. The expression, the wow-factor, the I-can't-believe-that-just-happened surprise. Creativity is the spirit of what you write and how it weaves the whole thing together. It is how you express yourself in the writing, by taking an amazing story and making it even better by adding flavor. After all, what is a skeleton without meat?
Style - The mind of the writing material. Perhaps the most complex criteria, Style is the uniqueness of what you write. The vocabulary, the ebb-and-flow wording, the amount of times you count yourself typing 'the', deleting it, and finding a new word to replace it. Style is the third layer that brings the writing together, making it or breaking it. It means finding the correct words to convey meaning without losing touch.
Story: The Elite was on the hunt for an artefact. The Humans had raced him to it.
Creativity: The Elite bled from his stomach, suffering a wound from a sniper rifle. He kept pressure on the site to stop the bleeding.
Style: The Elite's head exploded in a shower of gore, painting the surrounding area blue and purple. A sniper had picked him off from a considerable distance, the same from before.
All together: A lone Elite hunted for an artefact, ancient in nature. Humans had caught scent of his plan and raced him to it. By the time he had caught the trail, he bled profusely from his stomach. A wound from one of the insect's sniper rifles had stung him without warning. Applying pressure to the site to stop the bleeding, he pushed forward. Without warning, his head exploded in a violent shower of gore and matter. The surrounding area was painted in puddles of blue and purple. The same sniper had caught up to him, putting an abrupt end to the Elite's mission.
See how each individual part weaves together? A sound story, a little bit of creativity, and a stylistic approach to the writing that conveys the author's intended meaning.
Bonus: A rather obscure criteria, bonus points are awarded to the judge's discretion. It can be anything from simply adhering to the holiday theme, all the way to including the world's most unexpected plot twist. "Bonus" is just a judge's way of saying that they really like a particular way you did something, or something that you included or referenced. One judge may award a bonus for mentioning the number 7, whereas the next judge may not award any bonus points at all. It is entirely to the discretion of the judge.
Good luck everyone!

This is a story I recently made. It was made with the idea of "Show, don't tell" in mind. I hope it can serve as an excellent example of how to write a proper story, for those who have trouble with it.
