A more in depth look at a piece of history from several site characters life that drastically changed their outlook. From Kael becoming revenge crazed, Roh losing his mother for most of his childhood, Atl leaving his family behind, and Naat being ignored and becoming more closed off. And Mike by extension on the other side of the missiles.
For reference - the Gel family at this time with sex and age
Commodore Zaat (F - 55)
Kael (F - 34)
Pas (M - 30)
Weta (F - 28)
Vet (M - 25)
Atl (M - 24)
Qesa (Kaels Daughter) (F - 12)
Naat (Adopted daughter of Atl) (F - 10)
Roh (Kaels Son) (M - 7)
There would likely be more chicks around of the older children but keeping it simple.

2539 Human Calender, Gel Keep
"Here good Mama?" Atl asked looking toward the stage as he and Vet carried one of the tables. Zaat looking up from the plan she had drafted up about this party and nodding at her two youngest sons.
"Yes good, just turn it about a fourth and then it'l be good." The two sons dutifully turning before setting the table down. A few aides moving in with a table cloth and set ups for those who would be sitting there as the two moved to grab the next table. Sure they had a lot of laborer's to do this for them really but Zaat wanted this to be a family event. So everyone had to help. Sure it mainly focused on Kael but she was the one who wasn't around much being stuck in Covenant service. So Commodore Zaat wanted it to be special for her coming home for leave.
Vet and Atl waiting for a wheeled cooker to be moved past them before they started to walk the table over to the other empty spot. Vet sticking out his tongue as the position of his wrists dug back into his wrist blade apparatus but he dared not stop. Until Atl stopped and dipped his beak as he gently set his side down. "You don't have to put on faces for me Vet."
Vet just grunting as he loosened the straps around his forearm before moving both blades up to be out of the way. "Better to always be seen as the stoic Gel then drop the 'face' as you call it at the worst time." Moving to pick up the table again as he added. "Some of us still have images to keep."
"You say that but if you keep it up it'l get stuck like that. And don't you want to be more than some stereotypical Gel from the storybooks?" A thump as the table was set down a little harder than needed as Vet hissed quietly.
"Better to represent than repress. I know you want to do your...art stuff Atl but you're still a Gel. You can't be forgetting that."
A sigh as the two brothers thunked left forearms together, the only one Atl had with a blade, as they headed back to move the final table. "I know. And I won't even if I may not like to wear it..." Edges of his maw flicking up in a smile. "On my sleeve." That getting him a cuff around the back of the head and a chuckle from Vet as they continued the set up.
"I have been eyeing that steel production boss job though." Vet hummed as they grabbed the table. "That please you oh baby brother of mine?"
-----
"A gathering of the Gel family, does that sound like an opportunity to you Weta?" Pas asked, mostly rhetorical as he cleaned the R-5 he would be wearing at the party. Against Mama Gels wishes but he wasn't going to let a repeat happen.
"Oh how very operatic of you. You are sounding more like Atl now you know." Weta responded as she loaded needles into her sidearms magazine. Both rather grim looking in their task as the guard commander sat across from them adjusting his blade. Twelve other guards around the armory checking their weaponry. "You act like the last time was more than a ten second attack by some Sunk shortbeaks." A firm click and rack before she safed and holstered the dart pistol.
"Thats all the time it would take. Especially if they are far more prepared than last time." Pas muttered, glaring at his rifle as Weta made an exasperated sigh. The guards wisely keeping out of this argument as they focused on their tasks. The window open to the noon tide air and also providing a view out into the courtyard that was currently being set up.
"Oh sure and it would take even less time if they had a bomb here. How are you going to wave a gun at that and stop it mmm?" Standing up as she started to pace around the older guards as she egged on her brother. "So into your most recent job you can't get your mind off it can you? Can't stop being a bodyguard mmm?" She ran a hand through the guard captains mane to add emphasis. "I would suggest that you ice your feathers Pas - I'd take it as an insult if I was here as this was my job as a trusted guard and someone, even you, started to grumble it wasn't good enough."
While the thick leather sling for his rifle and now being lined with shotgun shells would look ridiculous over his waistcoat Pas seemed determined to put it on and secure it. "I am just expressing my concerns about the day. Go walk off a plank Weta."
"Oooh I'm so scared! Captain Tex, are you scared of today?"
"No Mistress."
"Tex, did you read the report I sent you? Did you act on it?"
"Yes on both accounts Master."
"See!" Spreading her arms and almost knocking over a pyramid of rifles Weta was all smirks. "Worrying your feathers right of your own head." She turned on her heel and swaggered out of the door. Leaving her brother fuming as the guards were now very carefully looking at their weapons.
-----
"Again!" The instructor squawked out as Roh and Naat were huffing and puffing. But they nodded and moved back to the start of the course. Taking a quick beakfull of water before the children lined up at the blocks. Hands down on the floor and feather tufts rising up as they waited for the go command.
They would be around at the start of the party but were expected to continue their schedule and sleep early to be up to resume training. Well that was the plan at least. Kael would likely wish to see the chicks and catch up on how they were doing and as the returning hero she would likely be the one to make the rules.
Roh had the advantage of having been doing this regime for longer than Naat but she had three years on him as well as size. So they were trading wins back and fourth. "Recheck!" Squawked again as both tightened down the straps holding the weights to their forearms and shins before they returned to the ready position. Both of them wishing that had gotten Qesa's cushy job today of star ship introduction.
"Hunt!" Both youths dashing off the line before leaping over the barricade. Kicking out with their foot talons to strike the dummy that was between them before tucking to roll. Both coming out of the roll at the same time as they pumped their legs toward the first turn. The instructor walking above them on a platform as she watched their performance. It was excellent. Both children would make stellar warriors.
Naat slowing down for the oncoming hairpin as Roh sped up. He had a feeling this was the last run of the session so may as well try something a little different. Leaping up he tried to jump into the wall. Crouching down with his momentum keeping him there before springing off of it into the new direction for the hall. It sure looked good but the end result of him basically cannoning himself into Naat sent both children into a tumble. Thankfully the jumble stopped before they slammed into the next barricade as the instructor looked down on them rather dourly as they breathed deeply trying to get the air back that Roh had knocked out of both of them.
"Roh," the circling instructor hissed out. "Explain."
"It was such a good idea too." Roh mumbled to Naats face as he rolled off her, his senior not looking too impressed as she retorted with.
"It was till you messed it up!"
"If you hadn't slowed down I would have got the inner track easily!"
"Roh! Explain!" A sharp rap heard as the instructor clanged their encouragement stick against the railing of the walkway. Both kids quickly standing up and to attention.
"I took a risk for increased speed Mistress! It did not work!"
"Will you do it again?" Roh narrowing his eyes a little. This could easily be a trick question. His eyes darting to Naat who raised her eye ridges twice before he took a breath and responded.
"Yes Mistress! Those who take no risks die Nestless and poor!" Another clang as the instructor glared down at them before breaking into a smile.
"Good Fluff," looking up to view the sky as she nodded. "That will be all, go clean yourself up and make yourselves useful at the party. But remember I will be waiting dark and early tomorrow for you both."
The kids both thunking forearm weights together before they easily leapt up and over the courses walls and jogged back to the keep. It was almost party time!
------
You never really knew how much you missed home until you were seeing it again for the first time in years. Clear waters with boats of all sizes puttering in and out of the port. Windows were such a lovely thing to have on ships so you didn't miss the majesty of the world. Well as long as the world outside wasn't a muddy war torn sunk hole. Damn War taking up so much of her time. She had chicks to raise damnit! And the Sangheili were always speaking so highly of themselves in their space ships and the Humans seemed to have no chance against them. What on Aecors Shore was taking them so long to wrap this all up?
"Mistress Gel?" The Ruuthian pilot asked as they had been grounded now for almost three rooks. Still at the controls in case there was some issue that she had seen. Kael blinking before shaking her head.
"Just glad to see home - appreciated for the quick shuttle service from the station." Flicking out her PP to get it beeped by the pilot who bowed his head and tapped the end of his beak.
"Of course Mistress, welcome home." The PP slid back into a pouch on her belt as Kael was still wearing most of her Murmello armor, the dufflebag scooped up that contained the rest of it as well as her other possessions before she hopped out of the hold. Crouching down and letting out a breath before standing up and sucking in a lungful of that sea air. It was so good to be back.
Even more so as she stepped off the landing platform and spotted the impressive mane of Uea Hul waiting for her. Kael making a mock gasp as she looked over the wheeled transport that he was waiting next to. "Oh Aecor's mercy! Its not a boat! Why Uea you'll surely crash it!"
The Hul Commodore taking it on the chin as they both embraced and rubbed the sides of their beaks together. "Oh I know, I had to tack and weave just to get here Kael," slipping the control key into her hand. "Which is why you'll be driving back." A big smile on Kaels face as he moved to the passenger side. "The roads are a bit different but I'm sure you can find your way back."
The Murmello eagerly tossing her bag back into the back as she settled into the seat. Leaning over to peck Uea on the cheek before starting up the engine. It was almost party time and she couldn't wait to see her family again.
-------
It was nearing dusk and the party was now in full swing. Steaming trays of fish and meat on one side of the courtyard and chilled fruits on the other. Both being taken in equal measure as the various elite of the nests mingled and chatted. Not minding the several armed guards who had not only checked them when they entered but were now watching from the walls. Several of them quite young as well as recent Gel graduates! Gota get your foot in the door early to ensure your future success. Captain Tex scanning the crowd as he stood on the stage beside Commodore Zaat. Who smiled as she patted his shoulder. "Still as alert as ever Tex. Please remember to get some food for yourself too during this."
"I will Commodore. Once most of the guests leave." That got a chortle from Zaat as she moved past him to the lectern at the front of the stage. Flicking out one of her wrist blades and holding it up. Gently turning it back and fourth to let the light shine and reflect off it to catch attention. Quite came over the group rather quickly in proper Gel fashion.
"I appreciate you all coming to not only see each other again besides those dull as sin trade meetings," a few chuckles heard as Zaat folded her blade back up. "But also to welcome my eldest daughter back home after her tour of duty." Kael already heading up to the stage as the assembled clapped. "She wished to say a few words before taking a break to check in on her own daughter."
Stepping back Kael moved up to the recently vacated spot. Changed into a very well made waistcoat, pants, and a scarf around the back of her head as she smiled at the assembled residents. Before she spotted Atl, her expression immediately shifting to disgust. The weakling was even holding out his PP to display some artwork to one of the Sha guests. That would edit her speech a little before she returned to all smiles as she started.
"Like Mama Gel said thank you all for coming. It is excellent to see a turnout like this for just me coming back. And well the free food helps too." A few cheers from the back of the more rowdy younger members and a few chuckles. The food was excellent fare. "But it helps me believe what I am forced to do is still the right thing to do. It makes those quiet nights of slipspace pass much better. Knowing that so many back on the home port continue to live to improve our stations and nest. The Humans are being pushed back further and further each day and with more of their worlds and ships lost I'm sure you all know what will come later. The Covenant will only look ahead as it always does, leaving the spoils for us. I'm confident that our home fleet alliances we have will be able to forge the Humans losses to gains for all Kig-Yar kind. Perhaps even enough that one day we will be able to break apart from our lovely overlords." A few grumbles heard as Kael let them before continuing. "As one on the front lines and privy to a lot of command details I believe it more likely than ever. The San'Shyuum and their Sangheili laptops charge forward in massive leaps and bounds. Stretching themselves more and more thin and leaving gaps in the wood of their craft of conquest. And like the little annoyances they believe we are we will slid into those gaps and expand. Expand and split their ship apart. Soon leaving them stranded in the sea - with we all around!"
Several cheers coming from the crowd as Kael picked out a bling behind her. Qesa was ready to call home with how her starship journey had gone. Excellent. There was just one more thing left to do. "Yes - the future looks bright for all of us! I'm sure even my coward of a baby brother will make great pieces of it one day," leaning over the lectern to glare at him. "If he can stomach even the tales of victory secondhand."
Kael as well as a grand majority of the crowd breaking out into laughter as she bowed and then headed off the back of the stage to the communication room. Atl just looking at the ground before he returned his PP to his pocket and turned. Heading right for the exit. It was time to leave.
Vet starting to move to go to his side before a click from the Gel factory overseer snapped him back to attention. He couldn't just leave the conversation with a superior like that.
Pas and Weta joining in the laughter before they pushed Atl out of their mind. Looking back on the party looking for suspect behavior or those who were trying to take fixtures off the walls for selling.
Naat and Roh barely hearing anything as they were a few rooms away. Chowing down on the food they had picked up earlier and using the scant free time they had to relax and enjoy some videos.
Zaat was one of the few not laughing. Holding two claws to her forehead between her eyes as she sighed. Trying to control her desire to slap Kael upside the head for such a public display of unprofessionalism. But as she finally figured out what she wanted to say and headed over to say it all that she heard was;
"Mama?" Before the cutting of a video call.
Atl soon forgotten as the Gel keep exploded into a frenzy of activity.
