.:: The HRPG Character and Ship Tiers Guidelines ;:.
Welcome to the Character and Ship Tiers Guidelines thread! Here’s where you’ll learn all you need to get started on your RP journey with us in our humble abode. Depending on the character tier you choose and your skill level, this can actually be a pretty quick process if you want it to be. Please put effort into your characters, though, and make sure you’re up to date on a few things before you begin:
1) Have you looked through our main RP thread? Our roleplaying system is pretty simple. There's always one ongoing Main Mission, and then there are peripheral missions to partake in as well called Secondary Missions. You must have an approved character to roleplay in either of these. (Although that is not necessary for side RPs, contained in a separate board.) You’d do well to at least take a look at the first few posts and last few posts in the Main Mission so you know what's going on at present, and make sure you understand how to reasonably insert your character into the ongoing story.
2) Have you had a chance to check out other members’ accepted characters? This is especially helpful if you’re wondering what we require of the different tier levels and to see how your character stacks up in terms of bio and RP sample length. If you’re not sure how to start a character, this is one of the most helpful things you can do to get ideas. (Just please, do not outright copy other people’s works. Plagiarism will not be tolerated!)
3) We have a number of helpful threads in the Information board if you’re stuck on things like what type of equipment your character’s faction can use, what different ranks each faction uses, and generally what tier you’d be aiming for for the rank of character you want. These threads are separated by faction for easy navigation. As far as the UNSC goes, we try to keep things fairly realistic and in-line with modern military practices, so you won’t see things like a 19-year-old major or a 48-year-old corporal. Check out these useful threads if you’re unsure what’s reasonable for your character.
4) In addition to the threads we’ve provided for you on this site, it’s always helpful to take a look at the Halo Wiki as well for anything not covered in the Information boards. We may do things a little differently here, but it’ll at least give you a good starting point if you’re a little fuzzy on some of Halo’s general lore. The link can be found here.
5) UNSC Army personnel are now approved for play in the RP. HOWEVER, be aware that unlike Marines and ODSTs, they do not follow the fleet. There is a high probability they will only be used in ONE Main Mission as they're usually posted to the defense of a single planet. After that, they will be utilized primarily in Side RPs. Due to their rare involvement, Army playable characters go up to Tier 3 only (2nd and 1st LTs), with captains and above being staff NPCs to be introduced as needed.
*
Once you’ve done all of the above and feel you’re ready to start a character of your own, return to this page for the templates. Now you can begin!
Please note this!
POST-APPROVAL
After your character gets approved, make sure you PM a staff member and have them add your character to UNSC Chain of Command structure (UNSC PLAYERS ONLY) or Covenant roster. Also ask them for suggestions on how to make your entrance in the RP if you are unsure.
And once you’re all set, welcome aboard and get ready to play!
Character Tiers
Please note, you need to create a T1-T3 profile before you own a T5 or T6 profile, and must be active in the role-play longer than a month. This is to reduce top heaviness within the Role-Play. Additionally, if you cease to post with that profile you will lose your T5 or T6 profile you have created (as in, it will be sent to the MIA board until further notice).
Here’s the standards we use to grade each tier:
Tier 0
United Nations Space Command
Any civilian character.
Covenant Empire
Any civilian character.
Requirements:
There are almost no requirements. Obviously we want a half decent grammar, but in terms of ease to acquire, there isn't much. You need 200 words for the bio and Civilian characters do not require a RP sample, which is pretty much telling us who you are (In terms of the bio). These profiles are used for non-combat social RP threads, but can be featured in combat, hence why the character creation template is the same as any other. Enjoy your civilian. Remember, they're not going to rambo around with Machine Guns.
-----
Tier 1
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Private (E-1), Private First Class (E-2) and Lance Corporal (E-3)
UNSC Army: Private (E-1), Private (E-2), Private First Class (E-3) and Specialist (E-4)
UNSC Navy: Crewmen Recruit (E-1), Crewman Apprentice (E-2) and Crewman (E-3)
Insurrection: Any low ranking insurrectionist
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Grunt Minors/Majors, Jackal Minors/Majors, T'vaoan(Skirmisher) Minors, Hurogok (Engineers)
Requirements:
This is our lowest tier and the one which includes the least amount of responsibility for your character. Thus, the RP sample may be short, and as long as it’s readable and doesn’t contain numerous instances of god-modding, it’s likely to be acceptable. The RP sample should be a little over 250 words, while the bio will be acceptable at 100 words.
--------
Tier 2
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Corporal (E-4) to Sergeant Major (E-9)
// ODSTS: Private (E-1), Private First Class (E-2) and Lance Corporal (E-3)
// FORCE RECON: Private (E-1), Private First Class (E-2) and Lance Corporal (E-3)
UNSC Army: Corporal (E-4) to Sergeant Major (E-9)
UNSC Navy: Petty Officer (E-4) to Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9)
Insurrection: High ranking insurrectionists
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Brute Minors/Majors, Grunt Heavy and Ranger Minor/Majors, T'vaoan(Skirmisher) Majors, Minor/Major Domo Elites and Junior Pilots of fighters or Drop-ships.
Unaffiliated: Kig-Yar Mercenaries
Requirements:
Since you’ll be responsible for a few more people than you would at Tier 1, this level will require a bit more effort to attain. Your RP sample should be around 500+ words this time while your bio should be around 250+, and it will be scrutinized a tad more for errors in mechanics as well as god-modding.
--------
Tier 3
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Second Lieutenant (O-1) and First Lieutenant (O-2)
// ODSTS: Corporal (E-4) to Sergeant Major (E-9)
// FORCE RECON: Corporal (E-4) to Sergeant Major (E-9)
UNSC Army: Second Lieutenant (O-1) and First Lieutenant (O-2)
UNSC Navy: Ensign (O-1) and Lieutenant (Junior Grade) (O-2)
// Office of Naval Intelligence: Any enlisted rank
UNSC Airforce: Second Lieutenant (O-1) and First Lieutenant (O-2)
UNSC Airforce available at this tier and beyond for PILOTS.
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Jiralhanae Captains, Sangheili Ultras, Kig-Yar Snipers, Kig-Yar Rangers, T'vaoan(Skirmisher) Murmillo(Specialist Minor), Grunt infantry Ultras, Drone Swarms, Commanding Officers of Corvettes, Commanders of tank crews. (Wraiths, Locusts, etc, etc.)
Unaffiliated: Kig-Yar Mercenary Captains
Requirements:
Tier 3 ranks generally have a fair amount of responsibility in regards to other players in the RP, and as such, they will be graded more stringently. Your RP sample should now be over 750 words if you’d like to play a character at this level, while your bio should be roughly 375 words.
--------
Tier 4
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Captain (O-3) and Major (O-4)
// ODSTS: Second Lieutenant (O-1) and First Lieutenant (O-2)
// FORCE RECON: Second Lieutenant (O-1) and First Lieutenant (O-2)
UNSC Navy: (Full) Lieutenant (O-3) and Lieutenant Commander (O-4)
// Office of Naval Intelligence: Any Junior Officer rank (O-1 and O-2)
UNSC Airforce: Captain (O-3) and Major (O-4)
Insurrection: Any insurrectionist leaders
UNSC Army unplayable at this tier!
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Grunt Spec Ops Minor/Major, Special Operation Major/Minors (Sangheili only), Sangheili Rangers, T'vaoan(Skirmisher) Commando(Specialist Major), Jiralhanae Stalkers, Commanding Officers of Frigates and Destroyers.
Requirements:
This tier includes big movers and shakers in the story, so you’re really going to have to work for a character at this level. Your RP sample should now be over 1,000 words, and the grading will be tough. Along with that, your characters bio should be roughly 550 words. It will be checked carefully for spelling/grammar errors and god-modding. Your bio will also have to be pretty lengthy and should contain few errors.
*Note: T4 profiles can not be NPC'd, this does not include Naval PC'ers who lead a Battlegroup/Fleet. T4 Profiles can be NPC'd only if a PC character has a higher rank. Example: A Major can control Captain's.
*Note: Additionally, in order to have a character of this rank, you need to ask a staff member to sponsor your project by sending him/her a PM with a rough draft or full draft of the character you have in mind BEFORE you post it.
--------
Tier 5
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) and Colonel (O-6)
// ODSTS: Captain (O-3) and Major (O-4)
// FORCE RECON: Captain (O-3) and Major (O-4)
UNSC Navy: Commander (O-5) and Captain (O-6)
// Office of Naval Intelligence: Any Senior Officer rank (O-3, O-4)
//SPARTAN-III: Any rank!
UNSC Airforce: Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) and Colonel (O-6)
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Grunt and Sangheili Spec Op Ultras, Hunters, Shipmasters of light Cruisers or Carriers, Sangheili Generals, Jiralhanae Chieftains, T'vaoan(Skirmisher) Champion (Ground commander and Specialist Leader.).
Requirements:
At this level, your character is one of the ones who shapes the whole story and is in charge of a vast amount of people in the RP. Thus, your RP sample (staff-provided) should now be over 2,000 words - with the bio should be around 900 words. This will be very, very difficult to get accepted, and it must contain NO instances of godmodding, nor any spelling/grammar errors. Once again, you are required to have staff members sponsor a draft of the character before you post it – this time you will need TWO staff sponsors. Additionally, your character may be denied on the basis of not having room for such a high-ranking character in the RP at present – this is why discussing a character idea of this level with a member of the staff BEFORE you make it is encouraged. To avoid top-heaviness, only a small handful of T5 characters will be accepted and playable in the RP at one time.
*NOTE: Tier 5 category profiles can not be NPC'd! Naval Units are excluded as long as you are a flagship/second in command of Naval Fleets!
**NOTE 2: Your RP sample for a T5 will be a staff-made list of 2 objectives for you to write. You must satisfactorily complete the mission(s) we provide in order for your profile to be accepted. Please DO NOT make your own RP sample, unless you want a lot of extra work for yourself.
***NOTE 3: You are only able to have one tier 5 and one tier 6 or two tier 5s or two tier 6s. DO NOT MAKE MORE THAN THAT. If you do then that profile will not be approved.
--------
Tier 6
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Brigadier General (O-7), Major General (O-8), Lieutenant General (O-9) and General (O-10)
// ODSTS: Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) and Colonel (O-6)
// FORCE RECON: Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) and Colonel (O-6)
UNSC Navy: Rear Admiral (Lower Half) (O-7), Rear Admiral (Upper Half) (O-8), Vice Admiral (O-9) and Admiral (O-10)
// Office of Naval Intelligence: Any Field Officer rank (O-5 and O-6)
// SPARTAN-II: Any rank!
UNSC Airforce: Brigadier General (O-7), Major General (O-8), Lieutenant General (O-9) and General (O-10)
Covenant Empire
Covenant: Fleet Masters, CO's of Reverence and CCS Class Cruiseres, CO's of Scarabs, Zealot-class Sangheili, Jiralhanae War Chieftains, Honor Guard
Requirements:
These profiles are gruesome to write. You need three staff members to approve before you even start to think about making one of these characters. They require a 5,000 word RP sample (staff provided), and a 1,250 word bio and need to be almost spotless of spelling errors and mistakes. These are the leaders of the roleplay. Please note, the staff reserve the right to deny these profiles if there are too many Tier 6 profiles, so this is why you must get three staff sponsors before even thinking about making one.
*NOTE: Your RP sample for a T6 will be a staff-made list of 3 objectives for you to write. You must satisfactorily complete the mission(s) we provide in order for your profile to be accepted. Please DO NOT make your own RP sample, unless you want a lot of extra work for yourself.
**NOTE 2: Your are only able to have one tier 5 and one tier 6 or two tier 5s or two tier 6s. DO NOT MAKE MORE THAN THAT. If you do then that profile will be dis approved.
***NOTE 3Please make sure that if you are wanting to make a tier five or six character that you pm ALL staff members so that your character idea can be discussed and sponsors attained more quickly.
Thanks
The staff

Tier 7
United Nations Space Command
UNSC Marines: Unavailable
// ODST: Brigadier General (O-7), Major General (O-8), Lieutenant General (O-9) and General (O-10)
// Force Recon: Brigadier General (O-7), Major General (O-8), Lieutenant General (O-9) and General (O-10)
UNSC Navy: Fleet Admiral (O-11)
// Office of Naval Intelligence: Rear Admirals (O-7/O-8), Vice Admirals (O-9) and Admirals (O-10)
UNSC AirForce: General of the Airforce (O-11)
Covenant Empire
Commanding Officers of powerful Covenant Vessels (CAS Class Assault Carrier, Super Carriers, Super Cruisers, etc.), Honor Guard Ultra, Councilors.
Requirements:
Tier Seven profiles require administrative approval to sponsor, as well as two additional moderator sponsors. You'll have four objectives, but otherwise the requirements of a profile in this tier have the same requirements of a tier six profile. You are not expected to do additional work, or have a longer RP sample/bio in any way. You simply need, with lack of better words, admin approval as well as two moderators, as tier seven characters are the highest on the chain of command in their specific branch and have the rights to make calls in character that could get other playable characters killed.
.:: Vessel Tiers ::.
In order to role-play a ship, you need a character, as mentioned above. However, the ship you plan on commanding is also a part of your profile. Below is the tier for the ship you are wanting to create. The way this works is very simple, but that will be explained below.
UNSC Corvettes are tier two vessels. You must have a Lieutenant Junior Grade (Tier 3) to command these ships.
ONI Prowlers are tier four vessels. You must have a ONI Full Lieutenant (Tier 4) to command these ships.
UNSC Frigates are tier three vessels. You must have a LT. Commander (Tier 3) to command these ships.
UNSC Destroyers are tier four vessels. You must have a LT. Commander (Tier 3) to command these ships.
UNSC Carriers are tier six vessels. You must have a Captain (Tier 5) to command these ships.
UNSC Cruisers are tier six vessels. You must have a Captain (Tier 5) to command these ships.
Covenant Corvettes are tier two vessels, you need a Tieriach to command these ships.
Covenant Frigates are tier four vessels, you need a shipmaster to command these ships.
Covenant Destroyers are tier four vessels, you need a shipmaster to command these ships.
CCS Class BattleCruiser is a tier five vessel, you need a shipmaster to command these ships.
Reverence Class Cruiser is a tier six vessel, you need a fleet/ship master to command these ships.
Powerful Cruisers and Carriers are a tier seven vessel, you need a fleetmaster to command these ships.
In order to command the respective vessel tier, you need a naval officer of the matching rank. For example, a tier three UNSC Naval Officer could not command a UNSC Cruiser as the commanding officer. However, they can choose between Frigates, Prowlers and Corvettes, depending on their branch.
