UNSC CAMPAIGN BRIEFING
We have recieved comm transmissions from friendly ships in orbit. As near as we can tell, they have shot down the Covenant Assault Carrier, and have begun landing their troops on the ring. This is excellent news - however, we all know full well that the Covenant aren't going to go down without a fight.
The Covenant have deployed nearly everything they have to the ring's surface, so the destruction of the assault carrier has deprived the Covenant of very little in the way of troop numbers. However it does mean that for the time being, we do have air and space superiority. We intend to make the most of it before the Covenants' reinforcements arrive.
General Durham has been placed in command of the situation. We're not sure if he's in one of the ships in orbit, or if he's on the ground. But he has ordered five strongholds to be setup around existing structures. Two archaeologists have been dispatched to each of the structures in question, to learn as much about this phenomenon as we can.
But we've also determined that the ring is of inestimable value due to the Covenant's seeming fixation with it. By itself, the ring is an archaeological find of unprecendented scale, but we've intercepted Covenant transmissions that show that their interest in it is far greater than that - it has some sort of deep religious significance, and they call it, 'Halo'. For simplicity, General Durham has decided to take the name for our own use.
This means, of course, that once the Covenant learn we've taken it from them, they're likely to commit a huge force to taking it back. And the UNSC doesn't even have a little bit of a good track record against huge Covenant forces.
We intend to fortify the ring as best we can - give ourselves a deep foothold. It's unlikely that we'll be able to keep a definitive hold of the ring once the Covenant arrive, so General Durham decided to dig in and prepare for guerilla warfare. Put simply, when the Covenant come, we'll let them have the ring, but then make them pay dearly for as long as they try to hold onto it. It's got a better chance than wasting all our forces in one huge battle once they arrive.
We need you to rendezvous with our forces 17 km upspin from you. This is a long distance - we'll be sending you four troop-transport Warthogs and a pair of standard M12 Warthogs. We've got ODSTs dropping in all over the place, making surgical strikes to take out the Covenant. They have their mission, let them handle the Covies. You just get yourselves to the objectives in one piece, and the quicker you can do so, the better.
