Gah. I said line of sight, not all in one line. Like we keep visual tabs on each other and don't split up so far we can't keep track of the teams. I suggest a signal, preffereably a tune, so that way it might sound like a bird call to "Bogeys", but we'll know what it is. Ah, strategy and communication go hand in hand, no? I think Jakob understood what you meant, Martial, but still considered the groups being together to be "too big a target" anyway. But hey, then again that means you can bring a lot more firepower down on a location if needed. Any tactic has advantages and disadvantages, so in the end it is best to simply pick something and get going instead of over-planning too long.

Well, this is what I get for being away for, like, two months...
I have next to no idea what's going on right now.

You did push-ups, then you ran, and now you're going to be put through combat.
I think..

lol! Looks like the same thing goes for you too Saber! Grab a snack, relax, and start reading. You should time yourself to see how long it takes.

Did a brief skin so far.
I planned to make my character - Cpl. Warfield - a kind of 'noob', so to speak. So does that mean I have to change his story so that he's faced the Covenant at least once?

Negative. That will not be necessary. This RP is for any and all UNSC infantry characters, which means some might have been in previous Main Missions while others have not. Either way it does not matter, you are welcome to join in. AFTER you read what's happened up to this point, you can post as if you've been there the whole time. You can pick whatever team, Alpha or Bravo, you would like to join and I will add you to the roster.

Sorry for the short, sporadic posts lately. It's been storming here in my part of Italy the last few days and I don't get a good internet connection at home. :(

I will have Dombroviski take point and go first as soon as Kaizer posts so I do not make a double post.

Something had to be chosen to get the RP moving forward, and none of the tactical options were really that great. My character's pulling rank because it's her prerogative to do so; she's in charge of the exercise. Chill out, it's just a game. If this is supposed to be more of a democratic thing, and ranks don't matter, then we can reselect the leadership for this exercise. I really don't feel I'm being unfair with anything/screwing anything up.

Jakob and Monkey, you two are doing a great job so far! You finally got the battle started and you are getting it off to a creative start! Keep it up! As for everyone else, here's the next lesson for you to check out so you can see what those two are doing... RP LESSON 05: FREEWRITE COMBATAs a story about military characters fighting battles in the Halo setting, combat is very much a central aspect of the Main RP. Fortunately, this crucial element is an easily mastered one, especially if you can grasp the freewrite concept of the previous lesson. (Which, by my observation, everybody did! Props to you guys! ;D) The biggest thing to remember is, as before, there will be no GM who controls all non-player actions. This means that when combat starts, do not expect anybody to tell you where the enemy is, what they’re doing, how they react to what you do, ect. That is all stuff you improv on your own. In a sense, each of you gets to be your own GM. That might sound overly simple, but that’s the point. With a community the size of ours creating the scale of story we do, it is highly unrealistic to have one (or even multiple) staff GM(s) dedicated to controlling every little detail of the RP, it’s just too much. Besides, combat itself is not the point of the RP, the STORY of combat is the point. We’re all here to write a story. If “actually fighting” things in RP is what you want, go play D&D.What the staff WILL do is steer the plot in certain directions. As explained in the previous lesson, they will provide the initial situation and any necessary details, and after that you guys take it away. How this relates to combat is exactly the same as anything else. For example, with the obstacle course you guys made up your own obstacles, how you dealt with them, and even if you made it to the end or failed. Now just replace the obstacles with enemies shooting at you. You get to make up what happens – how many there are, how you deal with them, all that stuff. That is freewrite combat. One very important thing to note here, however, is that this only applies to random, unspecified NPCs, such as ones you make up yourself to fight or ones staff include as necessary details in a scenario. Sometimes the staff will create a sort of “boss” NPC to challenge you, either just to make the situation tougher or more interesting, or they might even be introducing an important character in the story. The way you can tell the difference between a normal NPC and a “boss” NPC is if they are given a specific name. For example, if you are given a scenario to fight off a group of enemies, you will be describing those enemies yourself. If the scenario mentioned their leader was an Elite, then you still describe all enemies, just keep in mind one of them must be an Elite (you cannot make up something different, like a Brute). But if it is specified that their leader is Field Commander Voro ‘Savaree (likely including a little post from his perspective), then you know it is a “boss” NPC and you are NOT allowed to control his actions. The staff probably have something planned for him, so you must treat him as if he was some other player’s character, just controlled by the staff and not an actual player. “Boss” NPCs don’t necessarily have to be enemies, either. For example, GySgt. Malone counts as a “boss” NPC because he is controlled by me. Thus, you can freely interact with him through me, but you may not describe his actions like you can with the other random DIs. Point to remember: In combat it is the player’s responsibility, not the staff’s, to make up and describe the enemy’s actions (with the exception of “boss” NPCs).

Might I add something I personally think.
When facing small numbers of NPC's, it is alright to wrap it up in a single post, however; if you see a large group like what we have now, you should take a few posts which includes all of the active players. Wrapping up destroying an ambush that effects everyone in a single post can take out a lot of chances to RP.

If this thread doesn't start moving by Monday, you're all gonna have an ONI Captain leading you instead of Martial or whoever is in charge.

Green light, green light for Rambo. Tear 'em up, Monkey.
It's a shame that so many of the more active members in the thread, such as Martial and Shiloh and Nex all happen to be stuck in some sort of inactive streak, but as they say the show must go on. Just like when people disappear in the Main RP, we can't wait too long, we just continue with who we have. Those guys can always catch up later.
Jakob and Monkey, you guys were doing some great back-and-forth posting at the start of the exercise. See if you can keep it up.

Three, the two nests were facing each other and the players were right outside a box they made. Right in front of the players is an outcrop of rocks that holds three instructors with rifles.

It would be good if we had a map of the area for us to look over.

It might. But then again, the entire exersise is being improvised by you guys - can't really map something like that. Not to mention this exersise is too small to even be worth having its own map. Just gotta read carefully and construct a mental picture in your mind.
In the Main Mission, we always have a map of the overall area of operations to help orient the players. However, you will not have a map for every little location, and for that you will need to rely on your own mental image, just like now.
