The 'Battle for the Quarantine Zone' was an absolute strategical and tactical failure. The majority - if not the entirety - of the Marine detachment has been either killed or converted into the flood while the remaining (or rather surviving) UNSC Forces were captured with the Index in tow. You are the last of the known In Amber Clad's Marine Forces, and you're tightly imprisoned in the detachment block, to either be fed to the Kig-Yar or used as reclaimers for the Covenant's great journey. Fate, ironically, had another purpose for you over the annoying announcements of the religious event. The Master Chief - on a mission to kill the prophets - has rescued you, led you through the city-ship, and nearly completed his mission.
The Chief left you up a level, protecting the energy bridges you just came across, but the destroyed In Amber Clad is spewing flood combat and infection forms faster than the Covenant can respond - it doesn't help that they're using infected pilots to fly Pelicans across the city. Before you can get to the gravity lift the flood inevitably attacked, so unfortunately you and your squad step on another that takes you up higher while the Chief went lower. Cut off and surrounded by the infection once again, it's only a matter of time before you die, but how long can you make it - or can you make it out? Cortana knows you're there now, and while she's helping the Chief escape, she's also told you the only viable escape is through the crashed Frigate and onto a Pelican still fueled and ready to go... but why hasn't the flood used it yet?
The way this is going to work is through a random number generator:
For each engagement the dice is rolled per Marine - based on the ratio of Marines:Flood:Covenant - and the DM chooses what type of engagement it is and describes the scenario, the Marines respond based on their number. It's going to get complicated so at the start let's do smaller engagements first. The DM *can* choose to add Covenant Forces into the mix, but they'll be simplified in the dice roll. 1 is alive, 2 is dead, 3-9 is converted and 10 is mangled beyond use.
Let's use an example:
All Marines are still alive.
DM adds 40 infection forms and 7 human combat forms into the engagement. Their is a 5.8:1 ratio between UNSC Forces and the Flood, so each Marine rolls a dice, and as the ratio increases so do the number of rolls (6:1 ratio means six rolls, so one Marine would have to roll twice).
Marine A rolls ALIVE, so he survives the combat.
Marine B rolls ALIVE, so he survives the combat.
Marine C rolls INJURED, so he's hurt and now slowing the unit down.
Marine D rolls INFECTED, so he's been killed by an infection form and mutated into a combat form.
Marine E rolls ALIVE, so he survives the combat.
Now let's say the ratio is 7.6:1, there are now seven rolls.
Marine A rolls ALIVE (#1), so he survives combat.
Marine B rolls INFECTED (#2), so he's turned into a human combat form.
Marine C rolls ALIVE (#3), but he's injured, so he rolls again and gets KIA (#4). His body was so mangled the Flood couldn't use it anymore.
Marine D is either still infected or dead at this point depending on how the scenario is role-played.
Marine E rolls ALIVE (#5), so he survives.
The injured Marine was forced to roll twice, but that's only five rolls, so the three healthy Marines now have to roll again.
Marine A rolls ALIVE (#6), so he's survived the engagement.
Marine C rolls ALIVE (#7), so he's survived the engagement.
Marine E didn't have to roll again, so he was safe.
Using the random number generator, here are the results:
1-35 = ALIVE
36-40 = INJURED
41-49 = INFECTED
50-51 = KIA
51 = UNSC Marine Reinforcements* (One time use)
How they survive is up to the actual RP, but they do, so whether it is eliminating the flood from that scenario or retreating back over the energy bridges (towards the council chambers and detention center you were at) is viable. This keeps it simplistic, outside of plot armor, and keeps everyone expendable.
Someone will control the Flood like a game master for a DnD game. They're not going to RP the flood itself, but rather the actions of the flood based on the dice-roll (random number generator). The only lone exception is Marine Reinforcements - and I'm taking some liberties here - which would add UNSC Forces to the scenario. They'll come from the In Amber Clad, a Marine Unit that escaped on a Pelican after it slip-spaced into High Charity but before their hanger was overrun. It'll add four Marines, two Naval Personnel, a Pilot and a nearly fuel depleted Pelican.
