Art Project - Speed Drawing

Uploaded my art project. This was for my final exam at school. I appreciate any constructive criticism and feedback.





The drawing is of a new caste for my original alien species, called the "Xelials". This particular caste of Xelials are known as "Banshees". They are slim/lean hunters, and while they appear to be fragile, they are actually quite strong. It's rather odd, actually. Their skin/chitin armor is actually fairly weak to ballistic projectiles, and yet they still appear to have superhuman strength and speed. They rely more on their ability to swiftly dodge and avoid incoming fire than to actually deflect or absorb it. Therefore, there biggest weakness comes to actually being hit. While it can be fairly hard to land a shot on one of these nightmares, you can rest assure that any shot that actually hits will pack quite a punch.

I am once again reminded that I haven't actually posted any of my own art here... Anyway, allow me to offer a bit of constructive criticism. I'm a big fan of lightly sketching in a rough "skeleton" first, basically just a head circle, a hip circle, and a line for spine, shoulders, upper arms, lower arms, upper legs, lower legs, and feet. From there I overlay the skeleton with shapes (mostly cylinders) for all the body parts, also just a very light sketch. And then after that I overlay the fine details. Finally I pen in the lines I want to keep and then erase everything else.

I like that method because it allows you to visualize the drawing's pose first and get everything set up just right before you commit to any detail.

Right now, the way you do it is you just kinda go for the finished drawing right away. You drew the entire outline and then put details inside it. And don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that approach. One of my friends does it your way, has never used skeletons with his drawings, and is a fantastic artist. I guess I just struggle imagining the finished product, so I take extra steps to build up the drawing in layers. I find the extra structure helpful, so maybe you would too.

Just a suggestion of course. Art is different for everyone.
