.:: Monthly Drabble/Short Story Contests ::.

Each month, the staff will feature a Drabble or a short story contest for those who are interested in doing. They will either be free-form, where you get to pick and choose the theme/genre. Or the staff will decide, and yes, even user-created contests will be available to you guys and gals.  If you have any questions, I have left this thread open for replies. I will answer any questions as soon as I can.

Now, onto the next couple of things I would like to explain quickly, since these are how they will be like, in terms of word count requirement:

Drabbles – These are no more than 100 word stories that I have done on another writing forum when it was still pretty active a long time ago. I enjoyed them because they were pretty good writing exercises, and not just something fun to do in between whatever else I was doing back then with my other writing projects.

Short Stories – Obviously, a lot longer than Drabbles, but also fun when it comes down to writing contests. You can make them as long as you want them to be...as long as it's more than 100 words, and not novella/novel-sized, of course. If you want to create a novella or a novel, then perhaps you would like to try out the Novella/Novel Writing Contests that is also available here.

If approved, I will feature it as the next writing contest for the next available month, or if it's a holiday of a specific month (ie: SC's Halloween Short Story Contests in October).

So for the various different themes of the month, would there be restrictions to whether you HAVE to do a Drabble or HAVE to do a Short Story?

If a month, like this month, is a Drabble writing contest, then yes, you'll have to write one. Same with a month that's asking people to create a short story. Unless stated otherwise, of course.

A suggestion I have for people having trouble with a 100 word story is to do an exercise I believe is called; 'Short, shorter, shortest'.

What you do is you first write a 500 word story, and then take the same story and try to get the same point across in 250, and then do it in 100. It was one of my favorite writing exercises in my publishing class at Uni.
