The Cbox.

Hey all! Dave here.

So as it stands right now, I pay for the sites Cbox, so we can have awesome features that the shoutbox that comes natively with Proboards does not. Like instant refresh messaging, Avatars, Moderated chat, etc.

Now, its been shown that the Cbox now has a new level. Called Pro. That offers a shit ton more capability. That being said, Its more expensive. SO! What I had in mind was the following:

We try a month of Pro, On me of course, To see if its worth the money involved. Not going to lie. its a tad more expensive, but I am willing to pay it. Ill put a list down below of the features that are included.

What I want to know is, Are you guys ok if I do said activity? Or should I not bother. To re-iterate, I am willing to spend the money. I just want to know if you guys are ok trying Pro for a month.

Let me know and we will get going.

If it's more expensive, and it's your money, I can't ask you to pay more, Dave. We can try it for a month though, and see how it goes if you want to. Honestly, I can't speak for everyone, but I'm happy with what we have already - I just don't want you to pay more, even if you're willing to do so. In the end though, it's your choice.

But if it offers so much more to the site, Why not right? It adds a new way for members to communicate Plus more flexibility.

Ok, so, I might as well give some input. I like the idea of trying this since the features are pretty great and here is why:

Pros (lol):

Channel capabilities. If this does what I think it does, we can have dedicated Covenant, UNSC, etc. chat rooms for just those topics instead of everyone typing over each other trying to get noticed.

Custom audio/push notifications. Now this is something I wished this had from the start, since I use it on my phone just like an app. Having notifications would be super cool for me, and the audio is just a bonus.

Custom CSS. I am perfectly comfortable in the current CBOX, however we could really make it blend with the site even better with custom CSS.

Now, the Cons:


10,000 users. This is just ridiculous for us, and we have no use for this many user accounts.

"Yes, plus typing" This doesn't really do much. Just not that important.

Price. Well, it costs more, so I guess it really comes down to whether it's worth it based on the pros and cons.

VERDICT: I think it is worth it. In my personal opinion, it would be far more convenient and user-friendly, especially considering both voice chat and channels.

I'm not asking you to pay more money but if you are offering then I'm fine with trying it for a month and seeing how it is.

That's the Premium number, Sentinel. The Pro is even more ridiculous, at 100,000 users. It does say "visitors" though, so I wonder if that's users that aren't like signed in or something?

Honestly, the only feature I can see us using on this would be the channels. The notifications would be nice. Is there even a mobile app for C-box?

I noticed some people talking, both here and in the C-box about voice chat...which I don't see listed on the features list. If that is actually a thing...I think that plus the channels, plus notifications would be very handy. Ultimately worth it, even if we don't use the rest of the features. Especially if you can make channels expressly for a few people to huddle in a corner and talk while everyone else is blowing up the main channels.

But I think the real question is...how much is David currently paying for it and how much does this increase that by? And can others pitch in? I feel like a jag for asking that, since I'm not in a position to chip in myself, but I think it needs to be considered. It seems almost unfair to David that he has to be the sole provider for this.

To answer the question: I pay 23 dollars annually for the Cbox Premium. Works out to about... two ish bucks a month. Pro would cost... 120 a year, or 8.50 a month.

As for chipping in, I don't ask for money. Why? Because its out of my generosity to the site. It's something I want to do to give back to the site.

your right. It is my money, But ultimately, its the user base that uses it. I just want to make sure if I pay more for it, People want it is more I think ultimately what I want to know. But so far it seems positive.

Well looking at the jump between the features of the two versions I cannot say the that they aren't negligible. It's quite a jump, yes. Personally I see the capacity that for users that comes with Pro seems way over capacity for our current numbers right now. By all means go ahead and give the 1 month a try. Just saying you would be grossly overpaying for under utilized features. I'm indifferent either way.

I'm more or less with Serph on this. I don't mind trying it out, but the shiny new features don't strike me as anything really worth the extra cost.

I like the idea of the multiple channels and that's about it for me.

I was just so relieved when I found out we no longer had to manually refresh the c-box if we wanted to see if anyone has messaged, only to find out fifty people have and your message was drowned out.
