I'm writing the RP sample for my character and for part of it they are going to use jet packs / jump packs whichever you prefer and I was wondering what is the effective travel distance of a jet pack?

Very brief. They're used more like boosters by the ODSTs than actual jetpacks.
15-20 seconds at best.

If they have to clear a gap of about a 100FT or jump skyward 100 FT to another floor or ledge, I don't think it'd take that long in the air. The Jumppacks utilized by the UNSC tend to be powerful enough in launching the personnel assigned the jumppack and have enough fuel in their built-in tanks to carry a person as far as they need in little jumps. I found the jumppacks in Halo tend to be closer to what actual jet-packs/jumppacks are like or were designed for if used properly. Rather than one massive leap launching someone skyward with little car, the packs were to be designed for small jaunts...small skips or jumps.
As for a distance of 100FT, I'd probably say a six to eight second burn.
