So, I know ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, and that they are generally deployed from orbit in drop pods. I was just wondering about squad formation/ranks in squads, as well as what roles they would fulfill besides just straight combat.

In a straight-up firefight, a standing engagement, as you put it? The ODSTs following the initial drop and "landing" of their pods would rally and following that would join up with existing ground-side Marines and Army Units or Marine Units of an Army presence isn't available. ODSTs are Marines, despite being in an all volunteer program and will assist their fellow marines in a direct fight either reinforcing their lines or the old paratrooper method of "Fire and Maneuver".
Pertaining to the other "functions" of the ODSTs: 1) Demolitions 2) Counter-Insurgency 3) Recon (although the Marine ForceRecon would cover that too) 4) Assisting ONI Field Agents, if it ever comes up and if they aren't needed elsewhere. I might be forgetting something...
In terms of Squads and Units, I'd check the 153rd ODST section under the 120th MEU Thread in the Information section. Otherwise, the ranks and formations of the ODSTs match those of the Marines.
