Mission 8: Frontier [ONI Base/Astronav Observatory]

Maverick Observatory, and the underlying Maverick Research Facility is a partially abandoned site still maintained by the Astronavigation Division of the UNSC. Once a popular place to educate Astro-Nav personnel, it has become a bit of a run-down facility due to the progression of the war. Much of the training program has been moved elsewhere, but the Observatory itself has retained a full and active staff of Astronavigation employees. The ONI research facility beneath this has been mostly abandoned and closed off, leaving the Observatory facility itself the only place with an active human presence. Most recently, this base has functioned as the FOB for ONI personnel within the area, though most of the armed and trained agents themselves have been deployed on an operation on the coast. The only individuals remaining within ONI are those left behind to work as support over communications frequencies, when needed.

The minimal human presence and out-of-the-way status of Frontier, for an inner colony world, was considered a prime location for the specialized training of UNSC personnel. Founded during the heat of insurrection, it was a perfect location to be used without the worry of local terrorist cells forming among any disenchanted locals. It's location in the inner colonies ensured active security. For that reason, the original Maverick Observatory had been constructed. In its relatively secluded location, it acted as the way station for a good portion of the UEG's colonial exploration efforts, and allowed Earth to keep track on her colonies and plot courses for the exploration of new ones. Eventually, the UEG would begin to train a large portion of their Astronavigation division at such locations, allowing Frontier to grow and thrive.

As the Maverick observatory became more popular among UNSC personnel, ONI took particular interest in the location. During the course of a year, they had gained enough funding to "update" the observatory with the latest technology produced in laboratory settings. Of course, ONI had used a majority of this funding to construct a subterranean research facility to work in tandem with the observatory above it. In such a place, experiments recording slip-space probes, the improvement of inter-stellar communications, and the general collection of star systems would take place.

As of now, all personnel within the Maverick Astronav Observatory are here-by ordered to remain within the observatory in a lock-down state. Specially trained operatives charged with your evacuation will be sent on a priority flight to your location. Your evacuation is a top priority to both the UNSC and the Office of Naval Intelligence. 

Remain calm and remain useful, your staff is charged with the purging of sensitive navigation data within the confines of the Cole Protocol. 

Help will soon be on its way.

That was some shitty coffee.

Of course there was no tea in this damn outpost. That would be too much to ask apparently. As would being on the first ship out. Oooh no, they had to stay hereeeeeee and purge the data throughllllly rather than just, I dont know - burn it or blow it up. Grumbling some more to himself he tapped the yes command, again, to start the purging process on this console at least. One of the many consoles that would have to be triple or even quadrupled confirmed that deleting everything was what was really wanted. They really needed a fast way to do this...Why couldn't they just get an AI to do this? They could have been gone by now and just let the program there to sort it out. It was reminding him in a bad way of Protector and the exfiltration from there. Where after a daring and well executed search and rescue for his good buddy Mike, and apparently three Kig-Yar who he befriended - which was still a surprise to Chris - it wasn't until they were back topside when Mike revealed that the waiting Pelican was just for him and the now tied and secured Kig-Yar. Chris had barely gotten their names before they were bundled up on the Pelican with some equipment and Mike and the rescue party was just left to sit and wait. Thankfully nothing had happened but for nearing thirty minutes he had to sit there as Mays talked and whinged about what had happened so far before their ride showed up.

Taking another sip of water since it was better than the coffee here Chris once again typed in his provided codes and hit purge as the computer once again asked for his permission. He wasn't the only person in the room now anyway, four other scientists were at other consoles doing what he was doing, but all of them had a radio beside them with reports from the UNSC coming in about the battle happening a good ways off. Chris however was content to just hear the snippets of that and instead think about other things. Like how shitty the drinks were hear and those three Kig-Yar that had been captured.

After they had all finally left and he had talked to Mike about how dumb it was to not call for two Pelicans in the first place Chris had been told about the Kig-Yar. After making sure that the names he had heard the three speak to each other were correct Chris immediately got out his notepad and started to mark down the important details about the little adventure Mike had with the Aliens; How they had approached him first with food and not violence, how they had been seemingly interested in Mike's well being, had fought against him during the Innie ambush, and how they had followed when Mike was re-captured by the Innies. During the entire time Mike was busy reminding Chris that they probably had some ulterior motive and were probably going to eat him, but Chris countered with that he was sure Mike had one too about killing them in return. So there was no need to be speciesist about it. Chris was however very interested in this family member that 'Roh' had apparently lost to ONI. Mike didn't want to talk about it but it wasn't that hard to look up some of Mikes ealier missions and find out when a Kig-Yar civilian ship was destroyed because it was in the way. Typical bastard ONI move there.

But any chance he could have had to talk to Roh, or Eal, or hell even Talz about that event or their culture - which he so desperately wanted too since they had worked with Mike before and surrendered willingly - had been taken from him by being bundled off to this mission. And when he had asked about their fate to the higher ups he was told to stop poking around affairs outside his Section. Honestly they were probably dead already, like poor Bep.

Sighing a bit Chris took another gulp of water and leaned back a bit as the little progress bar continued to fill up. This was going to be a long boring assignment until they were collected.
