We used to have a list like this... I'm bringing it back.
Yellow is to reference someone, like a person or something that person said.
Example: Mike sighed and listened as John spoke softly in reply, "Drink up, then."
Orange serves the same purpose as yellow.
Example: Reth watched as Thel attempted to rally his troops with the sight of them approaching humans with their war machines, "On the blood of our fathers, on the blood of our sons, we swore to uphold the Covenant!"
Green is transmissions over a secured communications line.
Example: "Guardian Actual, break, break, break. This is Echo Actual, we are in danger of being overrun and are requesting emergency combat air support. I repeat: In danger of being overrun and requesting emergency CAS, how copy - over?"
Purple is transmissions over the secured Covenant Battlenet.
Example: "The humans are retreating but for a purpose. We've detected inbound human aircraft, we cannot intercept. Push forward and take advantage of the retreating humans!"
Red indicates a casualty, be it NPC or playable character.
Example: As the Marines pulled back the Covenant pushed forward, they knew an airstrike was on the way. Corporal Maveric had hit the ground hard after getting splashed with plasma, which left Lance Corporal Stavero in charge of the fire-team as the doc checked him out. "He's dead, Lance Corporal." The Corpsmen said. K.I.A

We can't have too many colors, as we have multiple skins, and some are harder to see depending on what skin you use. Keeping it minimalistic is best.
