In fact, kills are like...10%-25% of what gets you promoted. Completing objectives and doing renown acts gets you promoted. Just don't go all heroic and try and take on an army while everyone else retreats. You can't get promotions if your dead.

Whereas the Jiralhanae are more about the number of kills made(though the Jiralhanae count kills made off the battlefield too.)
