"Command, this is Delta 2." David radio'd in. "Covenant forces have rounded up the civilians and are preparing them for execution. Orders?"
As David waited for the reply, David scanned the situation. 14 elites and 22 grunts had the group of human civilians surrounded, huddled into a group. The civilians were white, filthy, and shaking. The attack had come sudden and swift and now most of the city was reduced to burning rubble.
"Delta 2, this is Command." the radio crackled. "Your orders are to dis-engage from the area and help Alpha 1 secure new objective."
"Sir! Are you ordering us to abandon these civilians?" David asked, Shocked at Commands decision to blithly ignore their prime directive.
"YOU HAVE YOUR ORDERS." shouted the officer on the other side. "COMMAND OUT."
Throwing the radio onto the ground in anger, David sat down on a piece of rubble, took off his helmet and ran his hand through his close cropped hair.
"Fuck. Commands out of their fucking mind." David snarled.
"What are you going to do Sarge?" asked one of the privates.
Glaring at the private, David just shook his head "Shut up private and let me think."
Looking down at the ground, David just breathed for a couple of minutes before snapping his head up at a shriek of pain that issued from the civilian group. What he saw made him widen his eyes in horror. The grunts had started to decimate the humans, Taking their plasma rifles and shooting them in their legs, arms and chest, Making them feel the burning pain. Then the elites would come in, Activate their energy swords and slice through their limbs slowly, making them suffer even more before decapitating them.
Standing up, David grabbed his rifle, racked the lever and made his intention clear when he made to leave the building.
"SIR" shouted the one private. "COMMAND ORDERED US TO FALL BACK"
Looking back at the private in disgust, David curled his lip and then snarled "If you wanna watch these people die, Fine. Go ahead." and then kept walking.
The private then leaped at David, tackling him to the ground. Then, grabbing David's radio, He yelled a code word into the mike. Suddenly the sky lit up as an ARCHER Missle slammed into the ground, decimating both the covenant and humans.
"NO!" screamed David, who threw the private off of him. Then turning on the fallen private, He kicked him hard in the ribs, The others of his squad watching mutely, their faces masking the rage they felt.
"You. Piece. of. shit." David began. "Why. Why did you condemn them to die?"
"BECAUSE THEY WERE GONE EITHER WAY." retorted the private, moaning in pain.
Suddenly, David's insides turned to ice and he felt an icy calm shoot through him. Grabbing his knife, David then quickly stabbed the private in the chest. "Your a piece of shit." David spat and then kicked the corpse and left the private there to rot. There would be no evidence when the planet was glassed.
Motioning to his squad, David picked up his fallen radio and reported in. "Covenant threat neutralised."
"Acknowledged. Proceed to next target." was the calm reply.
But David had no interest in following what command had to say anymore. He would finish the fight his own way from now on.
