"Get those civvies out!" Shouted Dave, As dozens of innocents fled the scene, some were grievously injured, most were sporting minor injuries.
The mission had been relatively simple. Get in, get the civvies out to the evac point and make sure that they didn't die doing it. A "Milk run" the El-Tee had called it. David remembered at the time that it sounded simple and relatively straight forward. What they didn't expect was the Insurrectionists to have already set up such a stronghold on the surrounding buildings. It had turned from a simple mission into a war from hell.
Dashing back into the building they were evacuating, There was only one person left. She was acting strangely, as if she didn't want to leave.
"Ma'am!" shouted David. "We need to leave. NOW."
Looking up at David, she locked eyes with him and slowly dropped her coat, revealing what looked like a very elaborate bomb strapped to her midsection.
"What..." was all the time David had to utter before she pressed a detonator in her hand. A flash of warmth and bright light was all that David remembered. Next thing David knew, He was flat on his back, Surrounded by other marines.
Blinking, David struggled into a sitting position, Pain lancing through his side as he did so. Looking around, he saw other marines with plasma burns, some with disfigured bodies. Willing his left arm to move, He noticed it didn't respond, and when he looked, he let out a scream of horror. His left arm was gone. reduced to a bloody stump. Bile rose in his throat as he continued to gape at the stump, before heaving and vomiting at the sight.
Suddenly, A laugh barked out from the right of David. Whipping his head around, He saw that the El-Tee that had ordered the run, Was standing before him now, A cigar in his left hand and a glass of brandy in his right. He had the air of someone who had just won the lottery.
"So. David. I'm glad to see you've awoken. You and I have so much to discuss." sneered the El-Tee.
"The only thing we have to discuss is how much a traitor you are to the UNSC" David spat, involuntarily quaking with anger.
"No. No. Don't think like them" The El-Tee snapped, slopping a little of his drink as he gestured with his hand. "Your not one of them any more. The sooner you accept that, the better off you'll be."
Looking at the El-Tee, David struggled into a standing position, using his good arm to prop him up. Then, hobbling over to the El-Tee, He looked him directly in the eyes.
"Go to hell." He hissed.
Sighing, The El-Tee gestured towards a guard, Who came over and cocked his fist back before plowing it into David's face, shattering his front teeth.
"When you wake up, We'll talk more." was all David heard before lapsing into unconciousness.
