A storm is coming!
I am happy to announce that a certain pet project of mine is nearing completion and I'm very excited to finally share it with you guys! I tend to have a lot of big, ambitious ideas and epic story concepts, and this is no exception. In fact, it would be safe to say that this particular RP I want to do is something I'd consider to be a personal masterpiece, unlike anything ever done on this site before!
However, before that can happen I need to run some tests.
Changes on the horizon
You see, one of the things that will make this RP different is that, unlike the more "freeform" do-whatever-you-want kind of RPs we usually do here, this one will have a much more structured set of rules. It's not a collective effort to write a story together, it's me guiding you through a world I have built and describing what happens to you based on your actions and choices. Think D&D in that respect.
In fact, basically what I'm doing is adapting D&D 5e concepts (mostly just combat rules) to a Halo setting, and dumbing some things down to make it easier for forum-based play-by-post. Thing is, I need to make sure the very much WIP ideas in my head actually work in practice, and try to find anything I might be missing before I put my grand scheme into motion.
So that's where you guys come in! Basically you get to be my guinea pigs while I experiment with this new system. If you're interested in helping me out or simply trying something new, read on!
The basic idea
DISCLAIMER: You DO NOT need any prior knowledge of D&D or similar tabletop RPGs whatsoever. But it might help.
How it works should (in theory) be very simple. You control your character's thoughts and what you attempt to do, and that's it. You have no say in anything about the surrounding environment, NPC actions or behaviors, or even the results of your own actions. That's my job. You try to do something, and based on your stats and the difficulty of the task you're attempting I will tell you what happens.
Just as a simple example, if you're attacking in combat you can't say "I gun down the Grunt with a burst of fire from my assault rifle." The proper way to phrase that attack is, "I aim at the Grunt and let off a burst of fire from my assault rifle."
So when RPing with this system, you're free (and encouraged) to be as detailed and descriptive as you are in a normal RP, but only with the details you've been given to work with and do not assume anything. Simple, right?
You don't even need to concern yourself with the stats or the numbers involved either. If you're curious you can read them when I post the results of your actions, but you can also totally ignore them if you want too. The point of having them is simply to provide a layer of structure and organization not found in ordinary freeform RP writing.
The plan
What I'm going to do is run a series of short "tutorial" RPs using this system pretty much just to see what happens. All you need to do is follow along. I'll explain rules on the go. Just keep in mind that since the mechanics of this system aren't fleshed out, like, at all, expect to run into difficulties or confusion, potentially on a frequent basis. That's why we're doing these tests.
Right now I plan on doing several different tests for specific topics, and might even repeat certain tests with new players and/or variables. I want these tests to be pretty short individually, but overall this might turn into an ongoing process and honestly I don't know how long this Beta testing phase is going to take. But any help you guys are willing to offer would be much appreciated, so if you want to be a Beta tester, just fill out the form below and post it in this thread.
Tester Username: Your name.
Availability: How often are you willing to post. Example: Daily, multiple times daily, every other day, etc. If you begin an RP beta, please be as active as possible. I personally will try to post at least once a day if not more, but there will be days I just won't be able to post at all. In order to keep the RP flowing along, I need any players involved to be on the ball and posting ASAP, so that when I get the opportunity to post I may do so without waiting on anyone.
Tabletop RPG Experience: Yes or no question, although you could elaborate if you wish. Again, THIS IS NOT REQUIRED. You won't be skipped over for testing if you've never played D&D before. Heck, I haven't really myself.
Eagerness: How interested are you in doing an RP beta test on a scale from 1 (Meh, kinda curious but not super interested) to 5 (I want to test RIGHT NOW!)
Owns Dice: Yes or no question. Say yes if you own your own set of tabletop dice, like a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20, that you could use to make rolls for yourself in case I want to try that.
I'll be looking primarily at Availability and Eagerness to select beta testers.
Final notes
Now I just want to say that not everybody is going to get to test at once. The tests will be single player or small groups, and if you are not chosen right away then please be patient and wait for another test. By filling out and posting the form above, you're simply giving me permission to poke you at some point for a test, that's all. No guarantees you'll be chosen, and it's not first come first serve. That said, I will try to get to as many different people as the testing process allows.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to let me know. Otherwise, thanks in advance to everyone willing to help me out with this.
