Faction & Division: UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence, SPARTAN Branch
Rank: Captain (O-3)
Name: Rolland Knight
Race: Human (Augmented Human—SPARTAN IV)
Age: 26
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 245 lb
Appearance: Prior to his augmentations, Rolland wasn’t particularly imposing, with a slightly smaller than average height and weight. Although he’s certainly in shape, he’s rather slimly muscled. His naturally light skin is usually fairly tanned, complimentary to his dark hair and eyes. Before joining the Spartans, when put under “field standards” out of garrison, he was known to sport a rough beard. Now, a thick beard can be seen any time he removes his helmet.
Rolland's MJOLNIR armor is a modified recon suit, colored for camouflage in desert or woodland environments. His recon suite includes a HU/RS, HUD upgrades with VISR, and enhanced motion tracker/heatmap. The pride of his combat equipment is an advanced active camouflage module.
Strengths: Rolland is highly motivated to protect the colonies as a result of his childhood past. He’s a fast thinker and sharp-witted, making him an excellent intelligence officer; he has a knack for spotting patterns that his peers can find difficult to see. Additionally, he’s a very skilled marksman.
Weaknesses: Rolland’s dedication to protecting others, civilians and soldiers alike, can lead him to put himself in risk in the small time he’s seen in the field. Physically, he is not the strongest, and relies heavily on his endurance, aim, and wits to keep him up in battle.
Biography: Rolland was born in 2525 on Arcadia, just before the eruption of fighting for control of the planet. He lived with his parents and three older siblings in the countryside of Eire, on a small farm that their family worked. His dad often worked jobs running supply trucks for a company with Rolland’s uncle.
After the UNSC made contact with the Covenant, Rolland’s uncle immediately joined Arcadia’s colonial militia. Rolland’s early childhood was relatively uneventful, mostly being spent in school and learning to work the farm, until 2531. When Covenant forces invaded Arcadia, his family was not in a good position for evacuation—living far on the outskirts of the closest major city, they would never be reached at their home, or even nearby. The five of them rushed to the nearest city of New Houston, where Rolland’s uncle was assigned to the militia.
To their surprise and relief, the Knights reached the city in the midst of the evacuation. A Marine APC found them and brought them to a small dropship that was evacuating civilians far beyond its seating capacity. All the Knights got on board except for Rolland’s father, who ran to help other civilians who were injured or otherwise couldn’t make it to the evac ship on their own. When Covenant forces broke into the evac site, however, the ships needed to leave almost immediately. Rolland’s mom covered his eyes, but he still knew what happened.
With no knowledge of his uncle’s whereabouts, Rolland, his mother, and his siblings were shepherded with the rest of the Arcadian refugees through the UNSC fleet for nearly a year before they were able to resettle on the colony of Boundary, closer to the inner colonies. Shortly after Rolland was re-enrolled in grade school, only a year behind for his age, his family discovered that Rolland’s uncle—Erik Sayid—had been recognized by the UNSC for his actions on Arcadia, and following the battle enlisted in the Marines.
Rolland knew he didn’t want any other child to suffer the fate he had suffered, and in 2543 reported to the Naval Academy on Reach. There, he was noted for an outstanding determination and steadfast moral resolve, and earned his commission as a second lieutenant in mid-2547. After graduating the Marines’ basic officer training course, he was selected as a ground intelligence officer, and attended scout sniper training and intelligence officer training.
In June of 2548, Rolland was assigned as the scout sniper platoon commander for 1st battalion, 18th Marines, just before they rolled out on expeditionary assignment on board the UNSCS Everest. On basic patrol, they discovered a small Covenant assault on the colony of Sigma, and the Marines were immediately deployed planetside to enable civilian evacuation and keep urban centers protected from Covenant forces. Rolland’s platoon was charged with clearing strategic locations in the city and utilizing vantage points to deny Covenant access at choke points.
The civilian evacuation was hugely successful, but bloody fighting on the ground continued for many months thereafter. Finally, in January 2549, UNSC forces were forced to withdraw from what was left of the planet after Covenant reinforces left them heavily outnumbered. Although the UNSC lost the city, the 18th Marines had managed huge success in their evacuation efforts. After returning from the battle, they were awarded a unit citation, and Rolland was promoted to first lieutenant. With their numbers considerably reduced from the fighting, however, the division was temporarily deactivated, and most of its combat ready members were reassigned. In Rolland’s case, he and his platoon sergeant were reassigned to 2nd battalion, 15th Marines. He managed to enjoy a few months of shore leave on Reach before embarking on a ten-month deployment with the 75th MEU through some of the outer colonies.
Their unit engaged in a couple of minor skirmishes on this deployment, both times engaging against Covenant boarding parties in costly space battles. Rolland served as an ad-hoc operations officer for one of these, coordinating forces to repel infantry landed from a Covenant corvette. Although the 75th faced considerable casualties in these space engagements, they made no combat landings in the deployment and returned safely in August 2550. After a period of administrative screening, Rolland was assigned to the 120th MEU, where he served through 2551.
He was on Earth in 2552, participating in the Battle of Earth with the Marine detachment of the Forward Unto Dawn. When the detachment’s lead intelligence officer was killed during the evacuation on Tsavo Highway, Rolland was issued a battlefield promotion to captain and ordered to take over for the late officer. He had barely assumed his new position when the Dawn accompanied the Sangheili fleet through the Portal, and from the ship he coordinated initial reconnaissance conducted by ODST advance forces and Marine STA units. He participated minimally in the actual fighting before exfil back through the Portal with Sangheili forces.
Following the Battle of Earth, Rolland was initiated into the Spartan-IV program. He was on board the Infinity as its Spartan branch’s lead intelligence officer, and commanded the Infinity 3rd battalion’s scout sniper platoon. After the Battle of Requiem, Rolland was reassigned to the clandestine squad Joker Seven as the team’s sniper and intelligence specialist.
